What makes a compelling nomination video?
The more detail, the better! Strong video submissions make a compelling case for the nominee by telling us why they deserve a VING check. Here are some things to consider when filming your video:
- What is your relationship to your nominee? How do you know each other?
- What are their current circumstances? What are they going through right now?
- How can a check from VING help their current situation?
Who’s behind the VING project? Where does all the money come from?
The VING Project was founded by Liz and Eric Lefkofsky and is funded by the Lefkofsky Family Foundation as a part of their mission to give back, celebrate teens, and provide opportunities for them to begin giving themselves.
Is there a catch to the $1,000? Will my recipient have to pay taxes on it?
Nope. All VING checks are received at delivery as a one-time tax-free gift of $1,000.
Can I nominate myself?
You cannot nominate yourself to receive a VING. Our mission is to foster a culture of giving and to spark philanthropic habits in teens across the country. Empathy and the act of considering another person’s needs are central to our work. Therefore the person you are nominating must meet the following criteria:
- 18+ years of age
- A U.S. resident
- Must be someone outside of your immediate or extended family
- In financial need
Do I have to submit a video or can I email an explanation?
To complete a nomination, you must submit a video explaining why the person of your choosing deserves $1,000 from VING. Nomination videos should be a quick 1-2 minute selfie-style video, which can be easily uploaded through our nomination form or emailed to us after your form has been submitted.
I submitted a nomination video. Now what?
All applicants will be notified on their selection status within 30 days. One submission/per teen/per 30 days. If selected, VING will work with you to plan for your amazing VING surprise.
How do I know if someone qualifies as “in need?”
Think about their current situation, and what could help improve it. If your nominee has recently gone through an experience that has made them financially vulnerable, the following phrases may come up during your conversation with them:
- “Overwhelmed by…”
- “Behind on…”
- “Tight on…”
- “No way to…”
Can I VING more than one person?
You can only give a VING once. If your nomination is not accepted the first time, feel free to continue sending in additional nominations until one is approved! If you have already given a VING to someone, make sure to spread the word.
Can I VING someone outside of the U.S.?
VING is a nonprofit organization that empowers teens based in the U.S. We cannot make donations to individuals who are not U.S. residents.
Is this also open to adults?
Although VING recipients are required to be over the age of 18, only those between the ages of 14-18 may submit a nomination. We endeavor to create a culture of giving in young communities and to provide teens with an opportunity to begin making a difference in the lives of those around them.
